Biography

The second daughter of John and Maureen Robinson, Penny was born on September 9, 1985. With the arrival of her second child, Maureen left her job at Tetrodyne Chemicals and became a full-time housewife, a position she found fully satisfying.

Penny, like all the Robinson children, turned out to be a beautiful, talented, and brilliant child. To go along with her appreciation of art, classical music, and literature were some very tom-boyish characteristics, which may have been a result of her closeness with her soon-to-be-born younger brother, Will. Along with most traits common to girls her age, Penny had a tendency to be overly imaginative, often to the point that her parents occasionally had trouble distinguishing fact from fanciful imaginings. This did, on a number of occasions, get her into trouble later during her year on Priplanus.

If Penny had one distinguishing characteristic, it was her high I.Q., which enabled her to finish the fourth grade by the time she had transferred to the USSC Training Center in 1993. Along with flight and survival training, all of the Robinson children received special tutoring from USSC instructors. By the time of the Jupiter2 launch when she was twelve years old, Penny had advanced to the tenth grade, and she had an I.Q. of 147.

Not long after moving to Houston, Penny joined the recently-formed “Space Scouts”, a program begun by Alpha Control to recruit young people to be trained for future colonization missions. Penny’s leadership abilities were proven when she was elected to the position of president of the Houston chapter. She retained this position until Alpha Control announced that the Robinson family would be the crew manning the Jupiter 2. At this time she resigned her position to devote all of her time and energy towards the training program for the upcoming mission.

Another aspect of Penny’s character is her outgoing, friendly personality which made her very popular with Alpha Control instructors and employees. With the large amount of time the Robinsons spent in training, Penny was seldom able to be around children of her own age. But she adapted to the Situation by making friends with Alpha Control personnel, and by becoming very close to her own family - Will in particular.

After the Launch

As predicted by Alpha Control psychological testing, Penny has adjusted remarkably well to the trials of space travel. According to John’s log, she is rapidly turning into a lovely young woman and has become an important complement to the Jupiter 2 crew.

On the Screen

Penny Robinson was portrayed by well-know child actress Angela Cartwright for all three seasons of Lost in Space.
