A robot is a machine resembling a human being and able to replicate certain human movements and functions automatically.
The term comes from the Slavic word "robota", meaning "forced laborer". It was first used to refer to an artificial being in the 1920 play R.U.R. by the Czech writer, Karel Čapek.
